April 2009 - A New Beginning

Wow, I don't believe it, the CHP Blog has been completely stale for almost a year! Time to change that.

Ok first up we need your help. The shop is struggling in this economy so please, please come in and make a point of buying something from us if you want to keep CHP around for a little longer. I am not saying we are about to close up next week, but unless we have a decent summer season, then we will have to evaluate if a surf shop remains a viable business going in to the slow autumn season. Unfortunately we are feeling the pinch from sales being 50% down since the beginning of December so we need you all to come in and buy stuff so we can get more stuff! :)

Please don't be shy in telling us what you want to see in the shop either. We can't promise we can make it happen right away but will do our level best.

New for Spring 2009
SURF
- Larry Bertlemann Epoxy Boards, read more about them at www.bertlemann.com
- 6 Fin Envision Fly, a cross between a short board and a fish with a twist. Perfect for the upcoming summer mush.
- SUP Rentals. Yup, try out the sport, come on in and rent a board. Careful you may get hooked. Or if you don't, at least you can speak from the heart next time an SUP driver drops in and takes your wave.

SKATE
- Jon has finally put together our skate program, we are still working on it so watch more more info coming soon.

Nat Young Book Signing - A Success

If you missed it, you missed out.

Legendary surfer Nat Young met and greeted his fans Monday, March 3rd at CHP Surf and Skate to celebrate the new edition of his book, "The Complete History of Surfing - From Water to Snow." He presented a slideshow of the most important images from his book and spoke about his career as an athlete and author. Before and after the presentation, he signed copies of his books. And as an added feature, CHP Surf and Skate also provided photo opportunity with Nat. Check out the pics and download your photos.

"It's especially important for me to have this book signing in Redondo. This area is one of the birthplaces of surfing in America and I have spent significant amounts of time here. I lived in Hermosa with surfing legend Dewey Weber and his family for many months since the mid sixties" said the former World Champion.

For all fans who missed the event, we have asked Nat to sign additional books. These books will not last long, so stop by the shop and get your signed copy today!

Surfing Champion Releases Revised History of Surfing
Explore the Evolution of Surfing, From Its Historical Roots to Modern Offshoot Sports

Sydney, Australia—January—Nat Young is recognized as one of the great surfers in the history of the sport, having won the world championship in 1966. At that time his new power-oriented surfing style was based on surfing a shorter board than was traditionally used. He is credited with starting the style which was the basis for contemporary surfing. With a lifetime of involvement with surfing and a deep interest in its history, he is the perfect person to discuss the sport’s evolution, as he does in The Complete History of Surfing: From Water to Snow (Gibbs Smith, Publisher, January, $39.95). The original version of Young’s The History of Surfing is the biggest selling surf book in the world with sales in excess of 150,000 in both hard and soft cover.
